WebSo faking them with compositor is adviced. Have two copies of the scene. One rendered out with cycles, other with Blender Internal or EVEE. Make a cycles render layer, then Blender Internal or EVEE (haven't tried combining passes witb EVEE so ask around) with only a volumetric pass. Then combine it in the compositor.
